We would like to thank all those who have given support to this project from the local community, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, the Forestry Commission, the Freshwater Habitats Trust, Alvecote and Shuttington Parish Council, Maurice Arnold (sadly now passed away), and all the contractors and friends, family and volunteers who have worked on the site and given us advice and support.

We are developing Alvecote Wood according to our Woodland Management Plan that has been agreed with and grant-aided by the Forestry Commission under the English Woodland Grant Scheme.

Are you another woodland owner needing advice? Would you like to read our Tree Safety Policy?

A delivery of roadstone Compacting the road stone with a roller
Road stone is delivered for the new internal road - That's another 20 tonnes and another £250! Driving the road roller to compact the roadstone for the new road

Completed access road The final bit - a new road kerb, entrance and security barrier. The first 10 metres of road had to be made by a Highways-approved contractor. We added the barrier, and the road cones, ourselves. (Road cones subsequently stolen!)

Mowing access tracks at Alvecote Wood
six foot high brambles at Alvecote Wood Rough path with tall brambles
The problem we were facing - six foot high brambles over much of the site Our initial approach was to bulldoze the brambles
Completed path at Alvecote Wood Tractor plus mower
We then completed the path using a brushcutter, but this took far too long The new rotary slasher made creation of paths much easier with our 30+-year old tractor
Newly-mown path at Alvecote Wood Dense undergrowth where we wanted a path
Using the tractor and mower we could create and maintain paths like this much more quickly Inside the wood the undergrowth was really dense - this is what we had to get through to make a path to the lower part of the wood.

New Internal Tracks at Alvecote Wood
Excavating the internal road tracks at Alvecote Wood New internal access track
Even the internal access tracks use a geotextile membrane to avoid deeper excavation and to extend the life of the path New internal access path now with a roadstone surface and suitable for the tractor or 4x4 vehicle
